Strong editorial operations are built around people, ownership and systems. At NBC Bay Area, I led Today in the Bay and its team through daily production and major breaking-news coverage. At CBS News Miami, I helped oversee a top-15-market operation. At WKAR, I have built capacity while making journalists’ names, beats and expertise more visible to the audience.

At NBC Bay Area I led Today in the Bay and its team. At CBS News Miami I helped lead a 100+ person operation and recruited, hired and onboarded more than 30 employees. At WKAR I built freelance and student pipelines, clarified ownership, and created systems that make journalists’ beats, voices and expertise visible to the audience.

I built the freelance system to protect capacity after federal funding cuts, then hired a full-time local politics reporter to expand our in-depth coverage going into election season. Making that expertise visible strengthens both the journalism and the connection with audiences.

When I arrived, I built a freelance reporter system to protect coverage capacity after federal funding cuts. More recently, I hired a full-time local politics reporter to expand our in-depth coverage going into election season.

The student pipeline

I brought Michigan State’s Capitol News Service class into the newsroom and built their work into our coverage. Their state government reporting ran on WKAR, and during the semester the students came on our broadcasts as story experts on the bills and budgets they were covering.
I have guest lectured at Michigan State in the TV News Producing and Reporting course: editorial judgment, rundown construction, story framing and multiplatform execution.
